Inauguration-Day-Teach-In

30 Minutes spoke with University of Arizona faculty members Suzi Dovi, Phyllis Taoua and Denis Provencher about the upcoming Inauguration Day Teach-In and March for Unity and Solidarity. The teach-in takes place on Friday, January 20th at Old Main on the University of Arizona campus from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Following the teach-in there will be a march to El Presidio Park with a concert. Also discussed was the newly introduced HB 2120 which seeks to expand Arizona’s ban against ethnic studies to also include university courses.

The event is organized by UA faculty members and YWCA Southern Arizona. They say that on January 20, 2017, the United States will face a new presidential administration that threatens the rights and safety of many in our community and challenges the tenets of our democracy. Therefore, they have organized this “Teach-In on Civic Engagement and Non-Violent Protest.”

Monica Casper and Roberto Rodriguez will be masters of ceremonies and the following people will present:

9:00 am Judith McDaniels, the importance of an informed citizenry and the public voices of activists
10:00 am Jeannine Relly, fact-checking and journalism
11:00 pm Enrico Trevisani & Zaira Livier, youth organizing, DACA issues & sanctuary status
12:00 pm Maha Nassar, deconstructing myths about Islam
1:00 pm Nina Rabin, immigrant rights and US law
2:00 pm Tyina Steptoe, history of the KKK and white nationalism in USA
