Guy Washington with Guy Washington discusses “The Quest For Freedom Moves West: African Americans in the New Mexico and Arizona Territories. Guy Washington, currently regional manager for the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, has worked for the National Park Service as an interpretive park ranger at Fort Point National Historic Site, Alcatraz Island, Yosemite National Park and San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. Washington specializes in research on the Underground Railroad.

Washington’s lecture highlights the experiences of some well-known and unsung African American heroes who played a role in the  New Mexico Territory (1850-1863) and the Arizona Territory (established in 1863). Among the topics covered are mountain men and explorers, the Compromise of 1850, slavery, the Underground Railroad, miners, settlers and Buffalo Soldiers.
