On Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, BEYOND is kicking off its 5th annual event to commemorate the January 8, 2011 shooting. This annual event was initiated by members of Gabe Zimmerman’s family and is dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of our community by providing opportunities for people to come together, get outside and spend quality time with those they love.
30 Minutes spoke with Beyond Organizer Michelle Crow and Jam 2 Grow’s Richard Noel and Sherrie Cox to discuss the range of activities.
A broad coalition of organizations and volunteers come together in the true spirit of BEYOND to organize 18 different events throughout the day to encourage the community to take part in healthy, positive activities. The main event of the day—Together We Move—takes place from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Armory Park and the Children’s Museum Tucson and includes free admission to the museum, a community drum jam session, rock-walls and jumping castles, a Kidical Mass Bike Ride, a dance extravaganza, cooking classes, educational talks and free assistance signing up for health insurance and much more.
Other events include walks/runs, hiking, biking, an Ultimate Frisbee Tournament, buffelgrass removal, dancing, nutrition and health classes, and children- and teen-specific activities. For a complete list, along with locations and times, visit www.beyond-tucson.org. Events occur from sunrise to sunset and span the Pima County region from downtown Tucson to Saguaro National Park West to the Tortolita Mountains to Cienega Creek Nature Preserve.
Participants are encouraged to sign up for the events they plan on attending; some activities have limited spots available. Be sure to like us on Facebook to see updates and photos throughout the day of all of the #BEYONDTUCSON events.
BEYOND is made possible by countless volunteers and the support of local businesses. A special thanks to our main sponsors, Tucson Medical Center and Cenpatico Integrated Care. A complete list of our sponsors can be found on www.beyond-tucson.org.
